eBike Safety in Venice: We're All For It!

Why Responsible eBike Laws Matter in California

California’s updated e-bike regulations are an important step toward protecting riders, pedestrians, and the long-term future of cycling throughout Los Angeles. As e-bikes continue growing in popularity across Venice, Santa Monica, and the Westside, maintaining safe speeds and understanding proper bike classifications has never been more important. At West LA Bicycle we are in a sort of game of tug-o-war. We support eBikes, we service eBikes, and we repair eBikes here.... we also support responsible legislation that keeps local bike paths safe and enjoyable for everyone from experienced cyclists to families and first-time riders. As a local business here in Venice, we welcome and rely on the beach crowds coming out here and supporting local businesses, but public safety and predictability matter just as much as performance.

One topic receiving increased attention is “off-road mode” riding and other high-speed modifications that push electric bikes beyond intended bike path use. The Marvin Braude pathway is not a Corsa Mode eBike race course. While faster settings may sound appealing online, they're also unnecessary and create avoidable risk in pedestrian-heavy areas like the Marvin Braude Bike Trail and surrounding beach paths. In our experience, 20mph is already more than fast enough for safe and efficient transportation along shared coastal routes. The posted speed limit allowed for path users is 15 MPH. Responsible e-bike riding means respecting the environment around you, slowing down near pedestrians and slower path users, and understanding that bike paths are shared public spaces and not freeways. Lose the car-brain, slow down, say hi to your neighbors. You do not look cool, fun, exciting, or awesome flying down the beach path at 30+ MPH on your eMoto. We believe educating riders about safe operation is just as important as selling or servicing the bikes themselves.

At West LA Bicycle, we remain committed to compliant rentals, properly configured e-bikes, and rider education that supports the local cycling community. As California continues refining e-bike laws, we believe the shops and riders who prioritize safety, transparency, and responsible operation will help preserve access to the incredible and burgeoning bike infrastructure we all enjoy. Supporting sensible legislation is not anti-rider.. it is pro-community, pro-Safe Streets, and ultimately better for the future of cycling and public health here in Los Angeles.
