Stop Buying Bikes on Amazon

Stop Buying Bikes on Amazon

There, we said it.

We understand the appeal. You're scrolling late at night, you see a bike with thousands of reviews, free shipping, and a price that's hundreds of dollars less than what you see at your local bike shop. It feels like an easy decision.

Most of the time it isn't.

At West LA Bicycle, we've assembled, repaired, and rebuilt literally thousands of bicycles this year. It's exciting stuff. But a surprising number of them came out of Amazon boxes, and unfortunately, many arrive with the same problems.

We're not trying to be salesy here, we're trying to look out for our neighborhood and get you the best bang for your buck. We want to help!

A Bike Isn't Furniture

Unlike a bookshelf or coffee table, a bicycle is a machine traveling at 15 to 30 mph with only two small contact patches connecting you to the road.

Brakes need to be adjusted correctly. Bearings need proper preload. Wheels need to be tensioned evenly. Bolts need to be torqued to specification. A derailleur that shifts poorly is annoying. A brake that isn't installed correctly can be dangerous.

When a bike is sold through Amazon, it's often shipped directly from a warehouse with minimal quality control. Final assembly is left to the customer, who may have never worked on a bicycle before.

We see the results every week.

"It Was Cheaper"... Until It Wasn't

The bike might cost $250 online.

Then you realize it came with unusable brake pads, the battery doesn't charge, the controller sizzled (SCARY!), the frame is misaligned, the bearings in the headset is so tightened down it's crushed the races and exploded the bearings.

You go to ask for a warranty. The shell company you purchased it from doesn't exist on Amazon anymore, they've now changed their name to XXIYTSINS or something similar. You're in an AI-loophole talking to fake agents that won't help you because you

We strive to offer the most affordable repair rates in Los Angeles, but even our rates cost more than what the terrible money-pit cost new.

Suddenly that bargain bike isn't such a bargain. It gathers dust taking up most of your spare-bedroom or living room until you say "fuck it" and leave it out on the curb for someone to take.

We've had customers spend more than the cost of the bike just getting it safe to ride. The company they purchased it from has no sympathy, they didn't buy the bike from us so we just have to treat it like a normal repair instead of comped warranty work like we do with the brands that we sell.

Replacement Parts Can Be a Nightmare

Many Amazon brands disappear as quickly as they appear.

Need a derailleur hanger?

Need replacement brake pads?

Need a battery for your e-bike?

Need warranty support?

Good luck.

Established bicycle brands support their products for years. Parts are available. Mechanics know how to service them. If something goes wrong, there's usually someone standing behind the product. We only stock bikes from reliable brands with robust warranty programs and good people behind them.

Brands like KONA, FAIRDALE, LECTRIC, RADPOWER, CIKADA, etc will not leave you stranded.

Reviews Don't Tell the Whole Story

A bike can earn five stars because it arrived quickly or looked great coming out of the box.

That doesn't tell you:

  • How it rides after six months. (It won't)

  • If replacement parts exist. (They don't)

  • How long the battery lasts. (It doesn't)

  • If the company will answer the phone when something breaks. (They don't)

Those are the things that actually matter.

Buy Once. Ride for Years.

A quality bicycle should last years, not months, weeks, or in many cases days.

Brands sold through reputable bicycle shops invest in engineering, replacement parts, dealer support, and long-term reliability.

More importantly, your local bike shop assembles it correctly, checks every bolt, adjusts every bearing, tunes every shift, and makes sure it's ready to ride before you ever throw a leg over it.

That's something an Amazon warehouse simply can't do.

That's okay.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting our shop is that you can actually ride the bike before making a decision. We offer rentals and demo bikes so you can experience how a bike feels in the real world instead of relying on product photos and online reviews or a measly parking lot cruise.

If you fall in love with your rental, ask us about purchasing one of our professionally maintained rental bikes at a great price.

Support Your Local Bike Shop

When you buy from a local bicycle shop, you're not just buying a bike.

You're getting experienced mechanics, warranty support, free advice, replacement parts, professional assembly, and a community of riders who genuinely want to help.

We'll still work on your Amazon bike if that's what you have. We want everyone riding safely, but please understand that if it's something electronic like a battery or a controller & wiring harness, it's very unlikely that it will be able to be repaired for less than the cost of what you purchased it for.

But if you're shopping for your next bicycle, do yourself a favor.

Skip Amazon, Temu, and Online Purchasing.

Come ride one here first from the trusted professionals that live right in your neighborhood here in West Los Angeles.

Your future self will thank you.
