West LA Bicycle's Core Beliefs

We are so excited to get to be open for business and serving our beautiful community here on the beach in Los Angeles, California. We are honored to get to work with you and we hold ourselves to an extremely high standard to best serve our community here. 

I'm excited to report that we have staff starting here soon. I was cooking up some employee documents and in putting to words what we've been acting on I thought it might be a positive thing to share here. 

These are the by-laws that we operate under at West LA Bicycle. There's more minutiae to this of course, but these are the foundational principles of what we do. 

1. We believe in the healing power of self-propelled forward motion.
   Whether it’s a bicycle, skateboard, walking, running, or rolling—moving ourselves through space improves mental health, physical health, and connection to the world around us.

2. We believe motion is for everyone.
   Ability, experience, age, and background do not determine who belongs on a bike or in our shop.

3. We learn something new every single day.
    Curiosity keeps us sharp, humble, and growing. Both individually and as a team.

4. We are superior beings to nobody.
   No ego, no hierarchy of worth. We treat customers, coworkers, and strangers with equal respect.

5. We reject hate in all forms.
   Hate speech, discrimination, harassment, or intimidation have no place here—period.

6. We lead with kindness and patience.
   Especially when things are stressful, busy, or imperfect.

7. We are honest, even when it’s uncomfortable.
   We communicate clearly, tell the truth, and don’t hide mistakes.

8. We can work together when things are hard.
   Challenges are faced as a team, not passed off or ignored.

9. We take responsibility for our actions and our work.
   If something isn’t right, we fix it.

10. We are prompt and respect people’s time.
    Being on time, prepared, and responsive is a form of respect.

11. We are diligent and professional.
    Our customers and our community trust us—safety and quality always come first.

12. We do things the right way, not the fast way.
    Shortcuts that compromise safety or integrity aren’t worth it.

13. We respect tools, equipment, and shared spaces.
    Clean workspaces and well-maintained tools are part of doing good work.

14. We protect our community.
    What we do affects riders, pedestrians, and the streets we share.

15. We believe bikes are part of the solution.
    To congestion, pollution, health issues, and disconnected communities.

16. We meet people where they are.
    Beginners, experts, commuters, kids, tourists, unhoused, housed, gay, straight, and beyond. Everyone gets the same care.

17. We listen before we speak.
    Understanding comes before instruction.

18. We support each other’s growth.
    Teaching, learning, and sharing knowledge makes all of us better.

19. We take pride in our work.
    Every repair, interaction, and decision reflects who we are.

20. We show up with intention every day.
    For our coworkers, our customers, and our community.
