Frequently Asked Questions

What is the League of American Bicyclists? What is an LCI?

What is the League of American Bicyclists?

The League of American Bicyclists is a national organization dedicated to making bicycling safer, easier, and more accessible for people of all ages and abilities. The League provides education and training for cyclists and instructors across the country. West LA Bicycle offers cycling education programs through the League.

What is an LCI?

LCI stands for League Cycling Instructor. An LCI is a cyclist who has completed the League of American Bicyclists’ instructor training and is certified to teach cycling skills, safety, and confidence. At West LA Bicycle, our LCI-certified instructors help adults learn to ride, build their skills, and become more comfortable riding on the road and around their community.

Can people really learn to ride bikes as adults?

Absolutely. Our adult Learn to Ride classes are designed specifically for people who never learned as a child or haven't ridden in years. We take it step-by-step and focus on building confidence at your own pace

What happens after I learn to ride?

Learning to ride is just the beginning. We offer follow-up rides and additional classes designed to help you take the next step—from practicing your skills to riding local bike paths and becoming more comfortable riding around West LA and Venice.

What do I need for my first class?

Just yourself, comfortable active wear, and closed toe footwear. We provide a properly fit and adjusted bicycle, helmet, and all the instruction and encouragement to get you going!

You don't need to already own a bike. If you'd like a bike after the class we're happy to work with you to get you out riding on something that makes you feel confident and capable.

Do you teach bike maintenance, too?

Yes. Riding confidently also means knowing how to take care of your bike. We offer maintenance workshops covering practical skills like fixing a flat, basic adjustments, roadside repairs, and understanding what your bike needs to stay safe and reliable.

What if I'm nervous about riding around cars?

You're not alone. Building comfort around traffic is a big part of becoming a confident cyclist. Our follow-up Smart Cycling classes focus on practical skills, positioning, awareness, and strategies for riding more comfortably around traffic. The League's Smart Cycling program is specifically designed to build rider confidence and competence.

What if I want to pick up a little knowledge from home before my class?

Awesome! More bike knowledge means more self-sufficiency and ability to enjoy the world around you by bike.

We definitely recommend that everybody in the world take The League of American Bicyclist's SMART CYCLING class.
